The Ricky Ryp Foundation was founded in 2012 for the purpose of continuing Rick Rypien’s legacy through charitable works. During his years in Junior and Pro hockey Rick was involved with many charities in the towns and cities he played in. The purpose of this Foundation is to continue with these actions by providing support to individuals and/or groups characterized into two categories. The “Local Talent” category will provide funding and or equipment to help those further themselves in academics, athletics or the arts. The intentions of the “Those in Need” category is to provide funding and assistance to individuals and/or families who suffer hardship through either illness, injury or other personal struggles. In 2012, three events were hosted by the foundation:
1) A golf tournament and charity auction took place in August which drew over 200 golfers in a two day event.
2) The Ricky Ryp Hockey School was a continuation of a tradition that started in previous summers during the NHL off seasons where Rick hosted a hockey school in his home town.
3) Finally a charity hockey game rounded out the summer. The teams were made up with NHL players, former teammates and friends of Rick. This game was held in conjunction with the NHLPA’s Goals and Dreams Program which provided 50 new sets of equipment to children in Southwest Alberta and Southeast British Columbia. The support of the NHLPA and the players that took time away from their short summers made both events a success. Kevin Bieksa, Tanner Glass, Dylan Olsen, Kris Versteeg and Darcy Hordichuk coached kids during the day then entertained a sold out arena that evening.
In 2012, $18,000 was donated to the three people which qualified for the Foundation's “Those in Need” category. Kids Sport was also given a donation of $2,000 which helped to financially support local children’s participation in various activities. Dates and specific details for the 2013 events are being finalized but will once again be made up of the Golf Tournament/Charity auction, the Ricky Ryp Hockey School and the Celebrity Hockey Game.
